Press release Wacken Open Air 2018

ICS Festival Service and GP JOULE establish strategic energy and mobility partnership

Wacken Open Air 2018 features Energy Hub to offer visitors information experiences and simple tools for local deployment of green energy

Reußenköge/Wacken – The organiser of Wacken Open Air, ICS Festival Service GmbH, is entering into a cooperation with GP JOULE: the pioneer for 100 per cent renewable energy solutions with its headquarters in North Frisia will be supporting ICS Festival Service in the latter's plan to successively switch to renewable energy and green mobility in the years to come – at the world's biggest heavy metal music festival and also at other events. Wacken Open Air 2018 will be the first milestone along this consistent pathway, with the ultimate aim of achieving total carbon neutrality.

"GP JOULE and ICS aim to join forces in developing and implementing practical and inspiring solutions for a fully renewable energy supply at large-scale events. The focus is on involving the local authority and region concerned as well as visitors themselves," says GP JOULE Managing Director Ove Petersen. "In addition to decentralised energy supply, this also includes the storage and distribution of green energy. The specific solutions that enable this include various large-scale and also portable on/off-grid systems, electrical and/or hydrogen-powered mobility for on-site and regional transportation as well as logistics – and also for the fun programme and for visitors themselves."

At Wacken Open Air 2018 from 2 to 4 August, GP JOULE will be represented by its subsidiary GP JOULE CONNECT, presenting an Energy Hub for festival visitors. This large show container will provide a point of contact where people can find out more and try out the options on offer. The Energy Hub presents tools for the decentralised generation of renewable energy specially developed for large-scale events (e.g. PV modules, including so-called Wacken-Joules for use on the balcony, using rapeseed oil generators as well as special power bicycles), for energy storage (e.g. by means of small PowerPacks as mobile charging stations for mobile phones and freezers, and also more powerful storage facilities using second-life electric car batteries) and the use of e-bikes, for example (including the specially designed "Wacken Fatbike").

"Sustainability is a key future issue for Wacken Open Air – in fact without it, this type of event probably won't even be feasible in the medium term," says festival founder Holger Hübner. "Everyone involved is fully aware that it will be a difficult process that requires a lot of patience. But instead of capitulating in the face of this major challenge of achieving – of all things – a carbon-neutral and sustainable music festival, we're taking on the task proactively. This is why we're so thrilled to have found such an outstanding partner in GP JOULE who is able to offer proven experience and expertise, specifically in the area of renewable energy supply and technical solutions for sustainability mobility at large-scale events. We regard this cooperation as an enormous opportunity to secure the future of Wacken Open Air for both fans and local residents while at the same time protecting the environment for us all."

About Wacken Open Air.

Wacken Open Air is the biggest heavy metal festival in the world. Having started out in 1990 with 800 visitors, today it attracts more than 75,000 fans who make the trip from all over the world to the village of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein, turning a community with a population of just 2,000 into the focal point of the festival scene for a period of several days. As the longstanding organiser of Wacken Open Air, ICS Festival Service GmbH takes care of a range of tasks such as band management, the Wacken Foundation, tour booking, music publishing, metal travel, merchandise sales and ticketing. In cooperation with partners, there is a network which in turn continuously generates creative solutions and ideas that revolutionise the festival experience, enabling technological innovations and unusual event concepts such as the Full Metal Cruise, the Full Metal Holiday and the Wacken Winter Nights. Wacken Open Air takes place from 2 to 4 August in 2018.

Founded in 2009 based on the belief that a 100% renewable energy supply is feasible, GP JOULE is now a system provider for integrated energy solutions from solar, wind and biomass power as well as being a partner at the supply level for heat as well as electric and hydrogen-powered mobility. A pioneer in the area of sectoral cross-linkage, the SME has a workforce of over 200 employees at sites in Germany and North America.
