Reminder: Visit GP JOULE at HUSUM Wind 2015!

Husum, 11 September 2015. Electricity from wind energy can be more. GP JOULE proves this at HUSUM Wind 2015. As the world's first company the specialist for planning, construction, operation and intelligent system integration of renewable energy is presenting a power to gas system in real time operation at the fair. This way electricity is converted into hydrogen by using PEM electrolyzer stacks, developed by GP JOULE, and thus made storable. When needed, the power can be retransformed again, or be used as hydrogen in the heating and mobility market or industry. "This way the electricity is “refined", new sources of revenue are exploited and the de-carbonation of heat, mobility and industrial markets is advanced," says GP JOULE CEO Ove Petersen. "So far our energy policy is a pure electricity turn. With the PEM electrolysis we can make renewable energy also be usable beyond the current market. Thus we conquer new markets for our renewable power."

Especially in the northern federal states as Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania already more green electricity is produced than consumed today. But so far, the surpluses can often not be used wisely: An increasing number of renewable energy plants need to be throttled on windy days by so-called feed-in management and more and more renewable energy is exported. Only in the first half-year of 2015 already 25 terawatts were exported – equivalent to eight percent of the total electricity generated in this country. “The planning of wind energy plants in the North becomes more difficult because sales is not assured. The electrolysis can change this. With the PEM electrolyzer stack, ready for production, we have developed a technology that will help operators of wind turbines to make more of their electricity," says Ove Petersen. The demand for hydrogen is growing steadily: in Germany alone, the annually need is around 20 billion cubic meters hydrogen.

The stack is also used in the "power supply gap filler” – a combined cycle power plant at GP JOULE headquarters in Reussenkoege (North Friesland) that transforms and buffers renewable electricity by PEM electrolysis as hydrogen. When needed, the hydrogen will be converted together with biogas into electricity in a combined heat and power plant (CHP) and re-fed into the grid. The first stage with 20 kW was already connected to the grid in May – the planned completion capacity at the end of 2015 will be 200 kW. Simultaneously, until the end of 2016, GP JOULE develops as part of a project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy a PEM stack with a capacity of 1 MW.
HUSUM Wind 2015 will take place from September 15 to18, 2015. There visitors can experience the operation of a power to gas system live at the GP JOULE-booth (hall 3, booth C.04).
