Torsten Albig visits GP JOULE

The Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein visits GP JOULE to gain insights into ways of generating added local value from renewable energies in Schleswig-Holstein.

Reußenköge, 30 September 2016 – Torsten Albig, the Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein visited the company headquarters of GP JOULE GmbH in Reußenköge yesterday. At this site more than 80 employees plan and design a large number of renewable energy projects in the areas of photovoltaics, wind power and biogas.  They are are part of a team of around 180 staff, who are permanently developing new ideas and innovations on how to use renewable energies in ways which reach far beyond the electricity sector. “Sector coupling” electricity, heat and mobility is longer just a catchphrase but has become reality.

Minister President Torsten Albig was impressed: “GP JOULE demonstrates the there is real innovative know-how here in the True North, which helps us make efficient use of surplus wind and solar power by converting in into hydrogen. And not only for balancing out load fluctuations. This unlocks enormous potential for Schleswig-Holstein. If we can manage to generate renewable energies not only inexpensively, but also convert and make it available in the state itself, we generate enormous additional value in the state.”

Ove Petersen, founder and managing director of GP JOULE, welcomed Albig’s great interest in the company’s activities: “We consider the Minister President’s visit as a confirmation of our projects and innovations and their important contribution to making Schleswig-Holstein a pioneer in taking the step from pure electricity (generation) turnaround to a true energy turnaround. We can utilise this pioneering role for creating value and achieving acceptance for renewables in the North and also export our successful concepts abroad.”

A prime example of this is: the power gap filler, Schleswig-Holstein’s only power-to-gas plant. Here GP JOULE presents hands-on how, through the uses of PEM electrolysis, surplus renewable power from the wind and sun can be converted into hydrogen and temporarily stored – simply and inexpensively. The heat generated in the process is fully used in the existing heat grid thereby reducing the need for renewable raw materials. It also demonstrates how the generated hydrogen can be turned into electricity again should additional power be required by the network using a combined heat and power plant (CHP) and how it is fed back into the grid. In this way we can make renewable power and heat available as required. This means that 100 percent renewable energies are a true reality – today, not tomorrow.

With its GP-JOULE-developed innovative power-to-gas technology, which is manufactured in Lübeck by the subsidiary H-TEC SYSTEMS, the company demonstrates how hydrogen generated by renewables can be utilised by industry or also used as a green fuel for fuel-cell-powered public transport vehicles. So let the urgently called-for mobility turnaround also begin.

The Minister President also took a look behind the scenes with regard to digitalisation in the energy industry and the intelligent control and management of renewables: In GP JOULE’s Control Center North he saw for himself, how solar parks, wind parks and biogas plants in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and Europe are controlled, maintained and optimised digitally.
