The municipality of Haselund in the Nordfriesland district is taking its heat supply into its own hands. Together with GP JOULE and the Obere Arlau citizens’ wind farm, it set up a dedicated company – Renergiewerke Haselund – in 2020 to build a district heating network. This now supplies sustainable heat from the region to over 100 households, a retirement home, a care home, several local businesses and the local primary school.

Mayor of Haselund
“With our district heating network, we’re providing a fantastic service for the people who live here. It provides them with sustainable heat from renewable sources that is both affordable and kind to the climate.”
Two existing combined heat and power units at a biogas plant in the northwestern corner of the municipality supply most of the heat, with another local biogas plant also connected up to supplement the baseload. In the long term, the Obere Arlau citizens’ wind farm will also support the heating network using power-to-heat technology.
GP JOULE was responsible for planning and building the district heating network, while Renergiewerke Haselund serves as a point of contact for any questions consumers might have as well as guarding against breakdowns and providing technical service.
