Green Energy Rocks!
GP JOULE is at the Wacken Open Air in 2023, supplying the festival with electricity from green hydrogen

Reußenköge/Wacken, 4. August 2023
Once again this year, GP JOULE is enhancing the green credentials and sustainability of Wacken Open Air – one of the biggest metal festivals in the world. As part of a sponsorship deal, the energy turnaround company is supplying parts of the technology for the festival operations with electricity generated from green hydrogen. In addition, there is once again plenty of action around the topic of energy at the GP JOULE stand on the Camping Plaza.
GP JOULE obtains the hydrogen from eFarm, Germany’s largest green hydrogen mobility project initiated by GP JOULE itself, which already supplies cars and local buses in North Frisia with green hydrogen. At Wacken Open Air, this fuel is converted into electricity in fuel cells made by SFC Energy. The electricity generated from renewable energy is then to be used from the opening on Monday 31 July through to the end of the festival.
In areas without access to the conventional power grid at Wacken Open Air, two H₂Genset are being used to generate energy that are specially designed for mobile and environment-friendly power generation by means of hydrogen fuel cells. To this end, GP JOULE is collaborating with SFC Energy AG, a leading supplier of hydrogen and methanol fuel cells for stationary and mobile hybrid power solutions.
At the Camping Plaza, GP JOULE staff will inform festival-goers about regenerative power generation and what renewable energies are capable of: from climate-friendly driving to the sustainable heating of entire municipalities. There will also be various games to bring the topic of energy to life.
In addition to these activities, Wacken Open Air will use a hydrogen-powered eFarm bus as a guest shuttle, while employees will also travel to their various deployment locations around the grounds using e-cars and e-bikes. These vehicles will also be provided by GP JOULE.
Rocking on sustainably in the north
“Green and black – they’re a good match in the north – as demonstrated by Wacken Open Air and GP JOULE. After all, what could be a better place for a festival to aspire to greater sustainability than the energy turnaround state of Schleswig-Holstein? We’re pleased that Wacken Open Air is moving forward in a pioneering spirit towards a festival that rocks on sustainably. There’s enormous potential here that we’re more than happy to support,” says Ove Petersen, co-founder and CEO of GP JOULE.
Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy: “Fuel cells based on green hydrogen are a perfect solution for the secure, mobile supply of energy at open-air events. We’re pleased to be able to make our contribution to a sustainable festival as a partner of GP JOULE.”
