"Companies need planning security and financial incentives"

THE GP JOULE MAGAZINE NO. 16 / APRIL 2025
Dr Jochen Köckler is responsible for the Hannover Messe, one of the world’s most important platforms for industry. A conversation about the challenges and opportunities of the sustainable transformation of the economy.
Dr Köckler, you organise the largest industrial trade fair in Germany. How is German industry doing?
Dr Jochen Köckler: German industry is facing major challenges, but at the same time is undergoing dynamic change. Topics such as digitalisation, decarbonization and securing international competitiveness are setting the agenda. Notwithstanding the high pressure, the industry is showing impressive adaptability and innovative strength, which is a positive sign for the future.
In your opinion, what does a future-proof industry look like?
A future-proof industry combines sustainability, efficiency and resilience. It uses energy and resources sparingly, minimises CO2 emissions and yet still remains competitive. Technological innovations that offer both ecological and economic benefits are particularly important. Value chains must also become more flexible and sustainable if they are to be able to respond better to global crises.
And can renewable energies contribute to generating growth and prosperity?
Absolutely. Renewable energies are a key driver of growth and prosperity. They create new jobs, promote innovation and strengthen regional economic cycles. Above all, they reduce dependence on fossil fuels and make the energy supply future-proof. Companies that put their faith in these technologies not only gain in sustainability, but often also in economic competitiveness.
More than 4,000 international exhibitors and 130,000 visitors come to HANNOVER MESSE every year. This makes it one of the world's most important platforms for industry. In 2025, the show will be held under the motto "Energizing A Sustainable Industry". "The focus of the show is exactly what we are doing and showing," says Ove Petersen, CEO and co-founder of GP JOULE: "We make new energies easy for industry – from consulting to the supply of electricity, hydrogen, heat and mobility". Germany imports almost 100 per cent of its fossil fuels from abroad – in some cases from countries with a dubious reputation – while only a very small proportion of its electricity is purchased on the European electricity market. In terms of supply and energy security, shouldn’t the energy transition – the switch to domestic energy sources – be a no-brainer?
Yes, it is. Dependence on fossil fuels is highly problematic both from the climate policy and geopolitical perspectives. We are not only strengthening security of supply with the energy transition, but also creating more independence and resilience. Domestic, renewable energies also offer the opportunity to secure stable energy prices for the long term and at the same time promote the innovative strength of the economy.
Why is it still so difficult then for many people to move away from oil, gas and coal?
This is primarily due to the high level of investment required for this transformation and the uncertainty around long-term developments. The switch is an enormous challenge, especially for small and medium-sized companies. In addition, many existing structures – both technically and organisationally – are still based on fossil fuels. The switch calls for courage, clear parameters and innovative solutions.
What do industrial companies need to be able to adapt – from politicians, of course, but also from energy suppliers such as GP JOULE? What incentives and offers might be missing?
Companies need planning security and financial incentives to invest in the transformation. Politicians are called upon to set the direction through clear guidelines and funding programmes. At the same time, energy suppliers such as GP JOULE must offer practical and economically attractive solutions. Cooperation between industry, politics and energy suppliers can be crucial here to break down barriers and accelerate the transformation. The Hannover Messe is the platform for initiating such collaborations.
Can and must industry also adapt to the new energy world? What fields of action lie ahead for companies?
Yes, industry is faced with the task of making its energy supply and processes sustainable. Important fields of action include using renewable energies, improving energy efficiency, the circular economy and digitalisation. It’s not just about reducing CO2 emissions, but also about working in a more resource-efficient way and remaining competitive at the same time.
It is often suggested that the sustainable transformation of industry is a brake on companies and Germany as a business location. Some entrepreneurs may be wondering what they can gain from this adjustment. What do you say to them?
I just say: sustainable transformation is not a brake pad, but a driver of innovation. Companies that focus on sustainable technologies at an early stage benefit from efficiency gains, new business openings and greater competitiveness. The energy transition offers opportunities that go far beyond reducing emissions – it opens up new markets and makes companies less dependent on volatile commodity prices.
Do you believe that entrepreneurs also have a responsibility to help shape the energy transition?
Yes, entrepreneurs bear a key responsibility. They are not only important drivers of the energy transition, but also role models for fair economic activity across different generations. They can promote innovation, set standards and make the economy more sustainable through the decisions they make. It is crucial to recognise this responsibility as an opportunity to be successful in the long term.
