Together with the district of Passau and the entire consortium, GP JOULE CONNECT is starting to prepare a feasibility study for initiating a hydrogen economy for the region

Starting signal for the HyPaLa project - Clean Mobility in the Passau region

Reußenköge, 18 November 2022

A workshop as a starting signal: Together with around 80 participants from the Passau region and the surrounding area, a successful kick-off event for the district's HyExpert study took place. GP JOULE CONNECT coordinates and is responsible for preparing a comprehensive feasibility study for initiating a hydrogen economy for the region.

In the summer, the district of Passau was awarded the HyExpert designation. Within the framework of the funding programme "HyLand - Hydrogen Regions in Germany" as part of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Programme, stakeholders are motivated to initiate, plan and implement concepts related to hydrogen. The aim of the HyExpert projects is to discover and implement the potential of hydrogen throughout Germany.

Within the framework of the Passau feasibility study, relevant stakeholders are identified and actors from industry, research and politics are included. In addition, production and procurement options for green hydrogen in the district of Passau are being examined and potential for the purchase and consumption of hydrogen in the region is being identified.

The study is being carried out by the consortium consisting of the consulting department of GP JOULE CONNECT, CENTOURIS as an institute of the University of Passau, endura kommunal GmbH and EMCEL GmbH. "With this project, we as a district are setting standards and further expanding our position as a pioneer in climate protection in the region. By involving regional companies and activating the potential of our region, we want to transform the district of Passau into a model region for green hydrogen," says District Administrator Kneidinger, summarising the goal of the project.

Now, within the framework of a large kick-off event, the starting signal was given for the extensive feasibility study, which will run for one year. A welcoming address by District Administrator Raimund Kneidinger was followed by keynote speeches on the topic of hydrogen. Alexander Gehling from NOW GmbH presented the hydrogen strategy of the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport. Lorenz Maier from the energy supplier MaierKorduletsch, Professor Dr Raimund Brotsack from the Technical University of Deggendorf and Peter Eiler from Verbund AG described the potential for establishing a local hydrogen economy and explained the requirements of hydrogen as an energy carrier. Afterwards, the invited guests were given the chance to help shape the first impulses and results of the study.
